4 Easy Steps to Proper Pearl Maintenance
Pearl jewelry requires regular care to preserve their freshness and beauty, and we list four steps below that will help you keep them looking their best for many years to come.
Unlike other gemstones, pearls are organic gems and are vulnerable to chemicals found in cosmetics, hair spray, and perfume. As a result, always put on your jewelry after applying make-up and styling products to avoid contamination and damage. In addition, pearls can also be harmed by perspiration. Before placing your pearls back in the jewelry box, wipe them gently with a soft cloth.
Storage
How you store your pearls can be just as important as keeping them clean. Contact with other jewelry may scratch and severely damage them. It is important to fasten the clasp to avoid tangles and then lay each jewelry piece in a separate compartment of your jewelry box. I recommend using a protective jewelry pouch or wrap each item in a soft cloth. Pearls can dehydrate when stored too long also.
Cleaning
Never, never, never use an ultrasonic cleaner on your pearls. I cannot stress this point enough. It can and will damage their nacre. To properly clean your pearls, wipe them gently with a cloth dipped in mild, soapy water, rinse them in fresh water and wipe the pearls clean. Dry them with a soft cloth. If you accidentally get some type of fruit juice or other chemical on your pearls, immediately wipe them clean with a soft cloth. Be careful not to submerge your pearls in water as this will weaken the silk thread.
Maintenance
It is important to check the clasps or screws holding your jewelry together after cleaning. With frequent wear, even well cared for pearls may loosen and they will require restringing.
