Gemstone About the Senior Enlisted Academy
The Senior Enlisted Academy (SEA) offers a platform for students to immerse themselves in a comprehensive educational journey, equipping them to meet the growing responsibilities of senior enlisted roles. SEA's primary goal is to cultivate leaders who are adept at navigating the complexities of global leadership.
Shaping Tomorrow's Leaders
Our core mission is to nurture senior enlisted leaders capable of providing informed decisions in naval, joint, and multinational settings, whether in command, staff, management, or leadership roles.
The SEA stands as the Navy's sole Professional Military Education (PME) institution dedicated to our senior enlisted community. Our curriculum is meticulously crafted to challenge and diversify the learning experience, ensuring our future senior enlisted leaders are well-versed in their domains and ready to tackle today's evolving challenges.
A Glimpse into SEA's Legacy
Our storied past has consistently focused on equipping both U.S. and international senior enlisted leaders with insights into national security strategies, joint force operations, and leadership competencies, all while emphasizing ethics, adaptability, and mission success.
The Inception of the Senior Enlisted Academy
In 1979, the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) redefined the roles of senior and master chief petty officers. They were no longer just technical experts; some were elevated to mid-management positions. While many thrived in these new roles, others needed further education and training to excel. Recognizing this gap, the Navy introduced the Senior Enlisted Academy (SEA).
The Inaugural Ceremony
The SEA's journey began with its inaugural ceremony on September 14, 1981, at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. This marked the launch of a unique educational initiative within the Navy's training landscape. The first SEA class, comprising 16 students, underwent a diverse curriculum, covering communication skills, national security topics, Navy programs, and physical fitness training.
A Dedicated Home
By August 1989, SEA found its permanent home in Tomich Hall, a facility named in honor of Chief Watertender Peter Tomich, a Medal of Honor recipient for his bravery aboard the USS Utah (AG-16) during the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941.
A Leadership Essential
In 1995, the CNO mandated that all prospective Command Master Chiefs and Chiefs of the Boat complete the SEA before embarking on their initial assignments.
By 2015, the Navy decreed that senior chiefs, starting from those selected in 2017, must attend one of the service's senior enlisted academies to qualify for the master chief rank. These academies include the Navy SEA, Air Force Senior NCO Academy, USMC Senior Enlisted PME, Joint Special Operations Forces SEA, and the Coast Guard Senior Leader Course.
